IN-ROOM SEMINARS

Friday 12 October, 2007

Demonstration of Live High Resolution Recordings
  2:00 p.m.
  Venue: Room 457
Presented By: John Atkinson, Stereophile Editor
Judging the sound quality of audio components is difficult if you don't know what the sound quality of the recordings you listen to should be. It was to break that infinite loop that Stereophile Editor John Atkinson started recording and releasing audiophile-quality recordings. In a series of seminars at RMAF, John will be looking back at more than 30 years of recording, and playing back some of his hi-rez masters to demonstrate why strict audio purism might not always be what audiophiles prefer.

Setup and Adjustment for Analogue Replay
  4:00 p.m.
  Venue: Room 457

Roy Gregory and Richard S. Foster of Hi-Fi+ magazine will also be on hand, planning to demonstrate the audible impact of correct cartridge alignment, VTA, different record equalization curves and the benefits of mono cartridges when it comes to mono discs. Their legendary demonstrations have been a fixture at UK hi-fi shows for many years, where visitors have come to expect an eye (and ear) opening experience. This is the first time they've been able to "perform" in the US and it should be well worth a visit. They'll be using a VPI turntable with no fewer than four Lyra Titan i cartridges. In keeping with the magazine's policy the rest of the system will comprise components recently reviewed or used as benchmarks. Electronics will be courtesy of conrad-johnson, with speakers from Avalon and the Nordost Valhalla cable loom. Phono stage should be the remarkable Zanden Model 1200 with the whole kit and caboodle supported on Stillpoints racks. The demonstrations are timed and closed door, with tickets available from the registration desk. Places will be limited so make sure that you get yours early!
